Seamus escaped his mysterious captors seventeen years earlier, taking a little girl with him and returning her to her home. Running for his life since then and needing a respite, he returns to the one location he considers his safe haven. Once there, he spots Megan across the lake and realizes she is the same young child he rescued. Only now, she is stunning enough to make him forget, almost, just how treacherous his life is.

Megan soon realizes fighting her attraction for Seamus, is a losing battle. But when the people hunting Seamus track them down, Megan and Seamus are faced with a much more immediate and deadly threat—a battle for the lives of all the Tuatha Dé Danann. Can they overcome their pursuers and win?

QUESTIONS WITH
PARANORMAL ROMANCE
AUTHOR
EVELYN M. BYRNE

1.  It fascinates me, the different paths writers take to publication. Will you tell us about your journey as a writer? When you started were there any big milestones? What was your first book?

I was driving home from Chicago and I had to pull into a rest stop. I wrote the prologue, dubbed it SOMEDAY, and put it away in the computer. Three years later, I had a dream; I pulled out SOMEDAY and started writing. As the story unfolded I named it: THE MAGIC FROM WITHIN. Four months later a friend of mine told me about East Texas Writers Association and I attended my first meeting. When I read the prologue, the president told me I needed to place it in their upcoming contest. I told her the book was not finished and she asked me if I knew how it would end. I said yes and she told me to write a synopsis. Five months later, I was presented with a 1st place certificate. That was in 2006. After many revisions and another name change, UNKNOWN MAGIC made its début June 15, 2010.

2. What is a typical work day for you?

I get up between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., make a cup of tea, and head up to the computer where I read and answer emails, check Facebook, and then spend a few hours writing and rewriting. Then I take a break and do any necessary chores. After that, I make phone calls and then it's back to writing for a few more hours.

3. For some writers research is a pain they’re forced to endure, and for others it’s their favorite part. What about you?

I spent a lot of time in Ireland over my lifetime, so I didn’t have much research there. Once I decided I wanted to base the book on Irish Mythology and decided to use Newgrange as the focal point, I began researching the Tuatha Dé Danann. Then the fun part of making them my own came in. Now, I only research areas I want to use in scenes of the books. My biggest problem with research is I have a tendency to get lost in it. The internet to me is such a fun place to surf I have to force myself to get back to work. Another way I like to research is to spend time in that area. My husband and I are planning a cruise so I can do my research for Sean’s book. So, as for research, I love it.

4. Are you a creature of habit, needing a routine to write? Or are adaptable to write when and wherever the mood strikes?

No, I really don’t need an actual routine to write. I just have to make myself sit at the computer. I have a bad habit of finding projects around the house to do, so I now make myself sit at the computer during the week and paint and remodel only on weekends. I do carry a small recorder with me at all times, because I never know when an idea will pop up. Trust me, they never formulate at convenient times either, (i.e. sleeping, driving, in a meeting) so the recorder is handy.

5. Do you have any advice for new writers—maybe things that you’ve learned through trial and error?

Never let anyone take your dream from you. Join a writers group. Go to workshops and conferences. Take writing courses; there are many online. But, most of all join a critique group.

6. Other than writing, what do you love to do?

Read, travel, and spend time with my family and friends. I love building or remodeling.

7. Please tell us more about your first installment in your new A Daughter of Prophecy series, “UNKNOWN MAGIC”.

Megan Tully was kidnapped at the age of eight and in a coma for five years after her rescue. Upon awakening, she cannot remember anything prior to that day. Now she is about to turn twenty-five and Seamus shows up in her life and informs her she is more than human and is destined to be his mate.
She fights her growing attraction for Seamus, but when the people that kidnapped her all those years earlier show up it becomes a fight for her life, and the lives of all the Tuatha de Danann.

8. What was your inspiration for “UNKNOWN MAGIC? Can we expect more from A Daughter of Prophecy series? Or is three it? Will there be a spin-off of characters from this series?

Some of my favorite authors had turned vampires and wares into the ‘person next door.’ I wanted to do the same for the Fae. The Daughter of Prophecy series is just that, a series. I do not plan to stop at three. Book two is scheduled to be out in December, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Book three and four are already in the works.

9. In your new series did you find you had had a favorite character? Did you notice that there was one character over the other that was more intriguing to write than the others?

I cannot say I actually have a favorite. As each of the characters come into the forefront I am enthralled with them. I will say though, I am definitely looking forward to Sean’s and Donovan’s books.

10. What’s up next for you and when can we look forward to seeing it out in our bookstores?

As I mentioned, STOLEN MAGIC, book two in the series, is due out December 14th. In STOLEN MAGIC, Megan’s uncle Patrick finds his mate, as the battle to save the Tuatha Dé Danann escalates. I am currently working on book three and four.

QUESTIONS WITH
SCIENCE FICTION ROMANCE
AUTHOR
JESS GRANGER

1.  It fascinates me, the different paths writers take to publication. Will you tell us about your journey as a writer? When you started were there any big milestones? What was your first book?

I realize now that I’ve always been a writer. I was a middle child between two rambunctious boys, and so I played a lot of imagination games by myself when I was growing up. My favorite assignments in school were the ones where I could write stories. In High School, my English teacher conveniently looked the other way while I wrote the epic and tragic adventures of Red Rose the Pirate in the back of my binder during class.

I came out of the Romance closet in college after I realized my grandmother was also a fan, and what was good enough for Grandma was good enough for me. I majored in Literature and took creative writing courses. When I graduated, that’s when I decided I really wanted to write a book.

Eight years later, I sold. It took a while to learn what I really needed to know to get published, but I’m grateful to all the writing communities I became a part of for showing me the ropes. It was an education I couldn’t get anywhere else.

As for my first book, I wrote it just after college. It was about shape-shifters during the California Gold Rush, and thankfully it will blissfully remain under the bed.

2. What is a typical work day for you?

My typical work day is a little hectic because I’ve been blessed with two precious babies who aren’t in school yet. I usually wake up and do promotion in the morning, then spend the day with the kidlets, and I write at night after they’ve gone to sleep. Right now I’m writing at a blistering pace, trying to get two to three chapters done a week on my latest work in progress. Consequently, I’m not getting much sleep, but I’m getting used to it.

3. For some writers research is a pain they’re forced to endure, and for others it’s their favorite part. What about you?

For my high-flying space adventures, I have the luxury of creating my own worlds. Unfortunately, I take world building very seriously, so I’m constantly going back to some of my roots in anthropology, evolutionary biology, history, and science to make my worlds as believable as possible. I’m not a very techie person, so I do have to take care to make sure things like spaceships are realistic, but also intuitive and easy to read about in my work.

I have just recently delved into the world of real historical research for my latest work in progress. I find it a little dangerous, because I tend to find little tidbits I have to fit in to the novel somehow. In the end, research always interests me because I’m a naturally curious person.

4. Are you a creature of habit, needing a routine to write? Or are adaptable to write when and wherever the mood strikes?

Well, with young ones, I’m afraid I have to scratch and scrape for any writing moment I can get. It’s the first law of survival, those who adapt survive. That said, keeping some sort of accountability is important. I’ve been known to reward reaching landmarks with decadent indulgences, like playing Sims for a couple of hours.

5. Do you have any advice for new writers—maybe things that you’ve learned through trial and error?

The greatest advice I can give new writers is to get involved with other writers. Join writer’s communities, learn, and then start to critique. I’ve learned the most about writing from reading and analyzing what works and what doesn’t in other people’s work.
Once you get to the critiquing point, remind yourself every day you are still and always will be a student of writing. Keep an open mind to all the ways you can make your work better.

Then develop your professional self. Be disciplined, generous, kind, interested, open, honest, and trustworthy. Keep putting one foot in front of the other, dodge punches when you can, and if one happens to smack you, don’t let it knock you out.

Keep fighting.

6. Other than writing, what do you love to do?

I’m an avid butterfly gardener, and during the summer months, I indulge in my hobby of photographing the butterflies that come into my garden. I post the pictures on my blog every Saturday. During the winter I talk mostly about writing and baking. I’m also a roller-coaster enthusiast, I brew my own beer, and I write slightly naughty haiku about innocuous objects and post them on Twitter.

7. Please tell us more about your latest release Berkley Sensation, “BEYOND THE SHADOWS”.

BEYOND THE SHADOWS is the story of two very dynamic leaders who are on the opposite sides of an impending revolution. Here’s the blurb.

His renegade wit. Her rigid code of honor. And a betrayal so deep it could tear their world apart.
Commander Yara knows perfect leadership requires perfect control and discipline. She has spent years living without the distraction of caring for anything—or anyone. It’s a sacrifice she’s willing to make. Yara has honed herself into the perfect heir to the Azralen throne, but a bloody coup could destroy everything she’s worked so hard for. She must return home to prevent war. Unfortunately the only ship available belongs to an Earthlen trader with no regard for authority—especially hers.
Cyn is a rebel, driven to protect those suffering at the hands of the Elite leaders of Azra. Using his alias to manipulate the lovely but icy commander onto his ship, he has to keep her from Azra long enough to ignite the revolution. But when he awakens a vibrant and feeling woman beneath that icy exterior, he gets more than he bargained for—love. He must find a way to convince Yara to join him, before they get caught in a web of deception that could tear their world apart.

8. What was your inspiration for “BEYOUND THE SHADOWS”?

The inspiration for BEYOND THE SHADOWS came from many places. I took a lot of inspiration from the French Revolution and ancient Rome. But the most personal inspiration for the book came from my feelings about my husband’s deployment at the time the book was written.

Yara, the heroine of the story, has to face true life or death fighting for the first time in her life, and it is hard for her. She makes mistakes. She panics. But in the end she comes out of her hardships with the true strength and conviction of character that she needs to be the leader she was born to be.

9. In your new release did you find you had had a favorite character? Did you notice that there was one character over the other that was more intriguing to write than the others?

I’m so in love with the hero, Cyn. He was such a dynamic personality to write. He’s witty, brilliant, and devious. The type of bad boy who won’t muscle you into something, he’ll trick you into it. I’ve compared him to a really naughty mix of Han Solo and Lex Luthor. It was fun bringing him to his knees.

10.What’s up next for you and when can we look forward to seeing it out in our bookstores?

Well, right now I’m trying something new. I’m working on a Steampunk inspired young adult project. We’ll see how it goes.

Book Description:

The truth of the soul.

Lysander Condellarie never understood why he had telepathic and telekinetic powers until the night his Praetorian father tortured him and left him for dead. Now, the half-angelic, half-demonic face he sees in the mirror is a reminder of the monster he must keep hidden or face expulsion from the order of assassins know as the Sicari. But his dreams of Ancient Rome hint at a destiny he finds hard to accept, especially when it involves the woman he loves, but can never have.

The consequences of desire.

A gifted healer in the Order, Phaedra DeLuca witnessed her mother’s murder when she was just a little girl. The haunting memory makes her loathe everything Praetorian. When she travels to Rome in search of an ancient artifact, she must work alongside a man who once cruelly rejected her love and healing touch. But her dreams of Ancient Rome tell of an irreversible and possibly dangerous future. For the distant past and present are about to collide--with the one man she is destined to love.

Over the Edge Book Reviews
Questions with
Award-Winning
Author
Monica Burns

What is the best part of being a writer? What is the worst?

The best part is that I get to escape from all the bills, frustrations of a day job and get to travel to places I can’t afford to go to, enjoy imagining myself wearing a beautiful gown, kicking a villain in the teeth and in general, just getting to relax and enjoy another world.
The worst part is facing a deadline and knowing that I might not make it, and if I do, the book might actually suffer because I’m rushing things. Publishing is a fast-paced business anymore, and if you work a day job, it can make for a high pressure writing environment

Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.

One eye-opening research tidbit was from the research I did for my Sicari series. I knew how Roman law, engineering and other infrastructure things have played such a strong role in the development of society since. While I knew of the Colosseum’s human carnage, it never really sank in how truly barbaric the Roman culture was until I did my research. Their view of life was so different from ours. It truly surprised me that a civilization so advanced for its time had such a duality in terms of it’s barbarism.

Do you have a favorite motto?

Dream it, believe it, achieve it

Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

My all-time favorite fictional hero has to be Sir Percy Blakeney from The Scarlet Pimpernel. He put his life on the line, loved deeply, was honorable, wore fascinating disguises, was smart, all of which I find incredibly sexy.

I have a much harder time thinking of a favorite fictional heroine, but Loretta Chase’s book Your Scandalous Ways stars Francesca Bonnard, who’s got chutzpah in spades, and I loved her.

Which fictional character would you hang out with?

My fav fictional hero, Sir Percy. I love being around smart people, especially men, and adventure is fun too. Sir Percy was known for his sharp wit, so being around a man who can make me laugh is a pleasure.

What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

Hands down it’s Pleasure Me. I’ve only had one other cover that I’ve been so in love with (Obsession), but Pleasure Me so captures the essence of the story, and I sigh with pleasure every time I look at it. The only thing missing is a blindfold, and I won’t say on which one! LOL

What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

That I believe in past lives and that I’ve had past life regression done. Based on the regression, I’ve lived three lives. Once as a man, a knight with property who was murdered by a woman, possibly his wife. I also lived another life in the middle ages where I was a healer of sorts, like a mid-wife. I was accused of witchcraft then the scariest life was when I was a servant for an aristocratic family who I wouldn’t betray and I went to the guillotine because of my loyalty. To this day I can’t wear anything around my neck at all without clawing at my throat.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?

The strangest thing is that I don’t Google my name. My husband likes to do it from time to time, but I’m too busy. I suppose one of the interesting things he found was a print copy of my book Obsession going for an outrageous price on eBay. Anyone paying more than $20 for that book should wait a couple of years until I can revise it and put it out on Amazon.

If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?

I’d definitely go backward.in time to the late 1800s. It was an exciting, rather romantic time of enormous change. Since I believe in past lives, I’m convinced I lived in this time period and that I was incredibly happy then. I’ve no idea what I did or who I was, I just know I was happy.

Monica, please tell us more about your recent release, “Assassin’s Honor” and Assassin’s Heart”, which is your second installment in the Assassin’s series coming this September 2010 by Berkley Sensations.

Assassin’s Honor is a treasure hunt type of book with a sexy romance between the main characters involved in the hunt. It’s got the DaVinci Code factor, the National Treasure factor, a bit of Klingon warrior factor, lots of Ancient Roman type sword action. It’s what I call adventure romance. I love Ares as he tries to do the honorable thing, but finds it difficult to do where Emma is concerned. Emma’s stubborn and hard-headed in spite of her many faults because she’s spunky. She adjusts a lot better to the Sicari culture than most of us would.

Assassin’s Heart has similar factors, but it has a dual story line for the main characters, plus a smaller plot line for a secondary character that readers first meet in Assassin’s Honor. Assassin’s Heart has the treasure hunt, but readers see more about the Praetorians, and there’s this wonderful past life story line that I had such wonderful time writing. And I adore Lysander. He’s a tortured half-breed that believes he’s not worthy of the woman he loves, and Phaedra isn’t about to let him get away with ignoring her. They’re a great match IMHO.

Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?

As a writer, I think it’s the story. My voice is what it is. It’s my personality. It’s how I write, and readers will either like my voice and want to buy me again, or my voice won’t be a good match with some readers and they won’t buy again. I certainly understand this. It’s a matter of preference. As a reader myself, I don’t always get the popularity of some books or authors. Since I can’t change my voice, I have to focus on the story and making it the best I possibly can for those who do like my voice and want to read my books.

Monica, please tell us where we can find you out in cyber world. For desperate readers like me, we just have to know…:)

I’m all over the place, website, blog, Facebook and Twitter. I focus most of my time on Facebook as it’s a great interaction spot for me and my readers. I have small conversations there everday on my fan page.

I know this is a difficult question with there being so many amazing authors out there to choose from but who are some of the GOT-TO-HAVE authors in your TBR pile?

I auto-buy Dan Brown, Loretta Chase, and Christine Feehan. I love these authors, and their works. I don’t get a chance to read much anymore because of my writing schedule, but I always have one of their books on hand to power through when I need a break from my writing or have a break in between books.

What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?

Currently, I’m working on Book 3 of the Order of the Sicari series. It’s Cleo’s and Dante’s story. Dante is the Sicari Lord who is being trained to become the reigning Sicari Lord. The character has taken a vow of celibacy because of his training, so Cleo is determined to seduce him. This book is supposed to come out next spring.

Pleasure Me is my next book, and it’s a virgin male, older woman story. The cover is absolutely fricking awesome, and I’m excited to see how readers react to Ruth and Garrick. I love these two characters so much.

I’d like to thank Monica Burns for stopping by and spending time with us, it’s been a blast getting to know more about you and your books. I wish you all the best and much success in everything you do. J

Thank you for having me, Christine.

Questions with
Urban Fantasy
Author
Jessa Slade

1.  What is the best part of being a writer? What is the worst?

A lot of writers say the best part of being a writer is going to work in your pajamas. Not only are they right, I think jammies being the highlight of your day says a lot about the writing process. Talk about damning with faint praise... Honestly, I don’t have a lot of nice things to say about writing. It’s hard for me. Rewriting is worse.

But setting the stories free... That has been both fearsome and delightful. Hearing someone has read my book gives me the same feeling as falling in love—the fluttery heart, the wide eyes, the wild urge to stay up late talking endlessly. I think it might be addictive.

2.  Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.

Going back through other times and cultures to find words for the demonic monsters in my storyworld, I was constantly amazed at how much of humanity’s mythology focuses on evil. We surely do love our evil. It makes me wonder if we can ever be good.

3. Do you have a favorite motto?

When I was contemplating what kinds of stories I tell—from my unsold Harlequin-length contemporaries and the historicals I started with, to the urban fantasy romances that finally became books—I found a common theme:

Love conquers all...Which explains the scars.

I love the imagine of Love as a battle-marked warrior, and sometimes we’re not quite sure if She’s fighting for us...or against us.

4. Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

I adore dark heroes. So pretty much all my favorite heroes come back to Beast, from Beauty and the Beast. Wounded and dangerous and brooding, oh my!

My quintessential heroine is Ariel, from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. (Sorry! The Romance Writers of America national conference was in Orlando this year. I must still have princess glitter in my eyes.) Ariel is spunky, determined, fun, and made just enough mistakes to become a stronger woman. Plus, she has long red hair, which I’ve always wanted.

5. Which fictional character would you hang out with?

Wouldn’t it be awesome to hang out with Huck Finn for a long summer weekend? Imagine the adventures! Oh wait, Twain already imagined them :) Still, I would love to float down a river with that rascal.

6.  What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

One of my favorite cover illustrators is Thomas Canty (http://www.endicott-studio.com/gal/galcnty.html). He illustrated the covers for Louise Cooper’s Time Master trilogy and Michael Moorcock’s Elric series. I find his style romantic yet faintly eerie, which is perfect for those fantasy books. And would be perfect for my books. Just sayin.’ Also, I’m just trashy enough to think Boris Vallejo (http://www.imaginistix.com/) rocks. I’m thinking if I had Ariel’s red hair and Boris’s heroine’s T&A, I would never have to work a day job again.

7. What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

I have no surprises. I sit at a computer all day long, spewing my secrets onto the page. Also, I can’t hold my liquor, so any secrets I might have had tend to get revealed at reader con bars. Maybe readers would be surprised to learn that, after consuming an entire bottle of sparkling wine by myself, I still managed to sneak out of the apartment of an amorous admirer by repeating “I will not sleep with you. I’m a virgin. I never slept with anybody” in Russian. The surprising part isn’t the Russian since I was in Moscow at the time. The surprising part is that I finished the whole bottle myself without falling asleep. The virgin part was true.

See? This is why I have no secrets.

8. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?

Maybe slightly disturbing is learning how much time I must spend online because when I search my name I find a whole lotta me. Blah blah Jessa blah. If only those words counted toward my daily writing goal. Sigh.

9. If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?

Forward! I’m so curious to find out where we’re going. Are we evolving? Learning to better ourselves? What new tech will become available? When do I finally get the personal jet pack that was promised to me in the 1950s?

10. Jessa, please tell us more about your recent release in your Marked Souls series, “Forged of Shadow.”

Forged is the second book of the Marked Souls. This time, we follow Liam Niall, the reluctant leader of the Chicago league of immortal alpha warriors possessed by repentant demons. Paired up with the spitfire Jilly Chan, he’s lucky to be immortal or she would kill him. Together they learn more about the bonds that bring the demon-possessed together and face the malevolent djinn-man who would drive them apart.

11.  Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?

Voice. With a little practice (okay, maybe more than a little) anybody can tell a story. Voice determines how the story is told. Give ten writers the same premise, the same characters, the same plot, the same end, and you’ll get ten different stories because of voice.

So what is voice? That’s another question :) As a new writer, I worried about voice, but in hindsight, I think it’s something that comes naturally with the aforementioned practice. If you’re a new writer, I’d suggest worry less; write more.

12. Jessa, please tell us where we can find you out in cyber world. For desperate readers like me, we just have to know…:)

I’m in the usual haunts:
http://www.facebook.com/jessaslade
http://www.twitter.com/jessaslade

Personal website: http://jessaslade.com/
Group blog: http://www.silkandshadows.com/
And I like to guest post, so any search will find my name a lot more often than I would have initially believed possible.

13. I know this is a difficult question with there being so many amazing authors out there to choose from but who are some of the GOT-TO-HAVE authors in your TBR pile?

I recently attended RomCon, a new romance reader convention in Denver (check it out for 2011!) and got to sit on an author panel with Christine Feehan, C.L. Wilson and Nalini Singh. Christine Feehan’s Carpathians are one of the reasons I write paranormal romance. C.L. Wilson writes high fantasy that made the genre feel shiny new for me. And Nalini Singh’s new Guild Hunter series is srsly OMFG wow. And I don’t say OMFG wow lightly. I think that panel was one of the highlights of my published life so far. Three of my favorite authors in arm’s reach. There mighta been some embarrassing starry eyes on my part but I don’t think anybody would blame me.

14. What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?

Book 3 of the Marked Souls, VOWED IN SHADOWS, will be out in April 2011. In that story, we find out what happened to poor, self-righteous Jonah who... er, suffered some unfortunate damage in Book 2. He takes some more hits in Book 3, but at least this time he has his heroine by his side. Again unfortunately, she’s completely wrong for him... or so he thinks. Poor Jonah.

Book 4 in the series will be out later in 2011. After that... Ack, so many stories, such slow typing!

I’d like to thank Jessa Slade for stopping by and spending time with us, it’s been a blast getting to know more about you and your books. I wish you all the best and much success in everything you do. :)

Questions with
Romantic Suspense
Author
Laura Griffin

1.  What is the best part of being a writer? What is the worst?

I love being able to meet people from all walks of life and pump them for information in the name of book research! Everyone is an expert on something, and it’s fun to hear about what they do.

2.  Do you have a favorite motto?

Carpe diem. Seize the day.

3.  Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

So many! I love Kay Scarpetta (by Patricia Cornwell) and Tempe Brennan (Kathy Reich’s heroine). Men? One of my favorite fictional detectives is Harry Bosch (from Michael Connelly’s series).

4.  Which fictional character would you hang out with?

I would have to say Odd Thomas, from the books by Dean Koontz. He can see dead people, which would lead to some truly interesting adventures, I’m sure.

5. What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

Well, I just got the German edition of my book WHISPER OF WARNING (which has been re-named Der stumme Ruf der Nacht for German audiences) and I was just stunned by how beautiful it is. It’s black with this white calla lily and blood-red lettering… Wow. I understand that German readers like dark suspense, and that’s just what this cover conveys.

6. What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

Probably that although all my books are set in Texas (mostly) I’ve lived all over the world… Argentina, Austria, the Philippines.

7.  What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?

Well, it seems I think Miley Cyrus “stole” my boyfriend?? I saw that headline once, but I’m pretty sure they were writing about someone else with my name.

8.  Laura, please tell us more about your recent release, “UNSPEAKABLE”.

I grew up on the Texas coast, and I have always wanted to write a dark murder mystery set there. The setting can be really ominous. And I knew I wanted a fish-out-of-water detective down there investigating, so that’s how rookie FBI agent Elaina McCord came onto the scene. She’s smart, resourceful, and way in over her head with this case—which is why she needs Troy Stockton (a true crime writer who is investigating the same string of murders) to help her navigate the local politics.

9.  Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why? I think voice matters most.

There are some writers who are so entertaining, you practically want to read their grocery list. It’s all about the voice, I think.

10. Laura, please tell us where we can find you out in cyber world. For desperate readers like me, we just have to know…:)

I spend most of my cyber time hanging out over at Murder She Writes with some of my favorite suspense authors (http://www.murdershewrites.com/). And of course, my own Web site (http://www.lauragriffin.com/) where I love to chat with readers. Drop on by!

11. I know this is a difficult question with there being so many amazing authors out there to choose from but who are some of the GOT-TO-HAVE authors in your TBR pile?

Like many avid readers, I have certain authors on auto-buy. (Actually, a lot of authors, come to think of it, which explains where all my money goes. :) They include Linda Howard, Lisa Gardner, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Kathy Reichs … and those are just a few of the women! Also, Lee Child, Stephen King, Scott Turow…

12. What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?

Next up is a novella that I wrote for an anthology with Sherrilyn Kenyon and Cindy Gerard. The book is DEADLY PROMISES, and it comes out in September. Also, the next full-length Tracers book, UNFORGIVABLE, comes out this fall. People have been asking me about Mia’s story, and UNFORGIVABLE is her book.

I’d like to thank Laura Griffin for stopping by and spending time with us, it’s been a blast getting to know more about you and your books. I wish you all the best and much success in everything you do. :)

OVER THE EDGE BOOK REVIEWS
QUESTIONSWITH
THRILLER AUTHOR
PAMELA CALLOW

1. It fascinates me, the different paths writers take to publication. Will you tell us about your journey as a writer? When you started were there any big milestones? What was your first book?

My journey began when I learned to read. Books always fascinated me. In elementary school, I remember being frustrated that I couldn’t write things the way I wanted to. It was in junior high that I was introduced to creative writing. However, I pursued a different professional path in university and didn’t return to fiction writing until after my second child was born. It was then that I decided to embark on a career as an author. However, I was pretty busy raising my young family, so it wasn’t until my children were in elementary school that I was able to treat my writing as a job – an unpaid one for four years!

The first milestone was to learn how to write good prose. I came from a professional background with a lot of business writing – I had to learn the craft of fiction writing. I kept reminding myself it took four years to train to be a lawyer, and that’s about how long it took me to learn enough to get published. I just kept writing, revising, attending workshops, and submitting to contests.

My first book was a time travel historical that won several contests, garnered me an agent and came very close to selling at a major house. It is still unpublished as I haven’t had the time to revisit it since I sold my thriller series to MIRA Books.

2. What is a typical work day for you?

I start working as soon as my kids head to school. The first hour is spent responding to emails, requests, etc. Then I get to work. I have three books in various stages of the publishing process: DAMAGED is in the promotion stages; INDEFENSIBLE is in production; and I just completed the research and outlining for TATTOOED and am in the writing stage. So my day is basically broken up between these three books. To write or edit, I usually unplug and disappear into my bedroom.

After school, I do my mom thing from about 3:30 – 9:00, and then I work for a couple more hours.

3. For some writers research is a pain they’re forced to endure, and for others it’s their favorite part. What about you?

I will happily confess to being a research geek. I love learning about new things. For TATTOOED, I found a cool book on taphonomy. Research for me is the opportunity to develop plots, sub-plots and expand my world and that of my characters.

4. Are you a creature of habit, needing a routine to write? Or are adaptable to write when and wherever the mood strikes?

I’m pretty routine-oriented but I’ve discovered I can write in most situations when the clock is ticking!

5. Do you have any advice for new writers—maybe things that you’ve learned through trial and error?

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is to spend time getting to know your characters. In my experience, writer’s block isn’t caused by not knowing what’s going to happen next, it’s caused by not knowing your character well enough to know what they would be doing next. Any time I get stuck, I head into backstory. And I’ve never remained stuck.

6. Other than writing, what do you love to do?

I love walking, hiking, camping, reading, watching So You Think You Can Dance, gorging on HBO, and going to movies.

7. Please tell us more about your June 2010 thriller release by MIRA, “DAMAGED”.

DAMAGED debuts thirty-something lawyer Kate Lange. A runner, owner of an abandoned husky and a fixer-upper Victorian home, Kate is struggling with her career and hasn’t had the best luck with love. Embarking on a new career in a high-powered law firm, Kate thinks she is finally making it, only to uncover a legal conspiracy that rocks the foundations of biomedical research – and puts her in the path of a dementing serial killer.

8. What was your inspiration for DAMAGED”?

The plot was inspired by a US criminal case, which I used as a springboard for the events that occur in DAMAGED. The characters were drawn from my own experiences working in a blue-chip corporate environment.

9. In your new series did you find you had had a favorite character? Did you notice that there was one character over the other that was more intriguing to write than the others?

That’s a tough question. The leads in the series are very rewarding to write, because you can really explore their internal journeys. But some of the secondary characters let you go in a different direction. For example, in DAMAGED, I enjoyed writing the criminal court judge’s character. In INDEFENSIBLE, I got a kick out of criminal defense lawyer Eddie Bent.

10. What’s up next for you and when can we look forward to seeing it out in our bookstores?

During the fall, I will be writing TATTOOED, gearing up for the launch of INDEFENSIBLE, and doing promotional appearances for DAMAGED. INDEFENSIBLE hits the stores on January 1, 2011, and then TATTOOED next summer. A fourth book is underway for June, 2012.

Questions with
New York Times Bestselling
Author
Cherry Adair

1. Question: What is the best part of being a writer? What is the worst?

The answer to both is: Finishing a book.

2.  Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.

While doing the research for BLACK MAGIC I learned that snakes have two penises. (The fact that they even had ONE was a news flash! Lol)

3. Do you have a favorite motto?

Sit your butt in the chair and write!

4.  Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

Always the characters in the book I've just finished. So, Jack Slater and Sara Temple in BLACK MAGIC are currently my favs.

5. Which fictional character would you hang out with?

Sara Temple - we'd discuss what it's like to be an Interior Designer, and I'd try to persuade her to give magic another try.

6. What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

My favorite cover hands down was my cover for WHITE HEAT. One really has to look to get the full impact of a man's hands on the small of a woman's back. Sensual and sexy in black and white with red text. Worst was the cover where the girl seemed to have a large. . .goiter growing out of her neck, or the one where the couple has red ectoplasm coming out of the top of their heads. (being beamed back to the mother ship perhaps?!)

7. What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

I'm originally from Cape Town South Africa, I used to be an interior designer, I have a passion for motivating unpublished writers to achieve their goal. (sometimes with the application of my shoe to their bottoms if necessary! Lol)

8.  What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?

I'm a stripper. A fruit. A blossom. A bomb. And a rude connotation.

9.  If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?

Back, because I'd know what was coming next.

10.  Cherry, please tell us more about your recent release, “BLACK MAGIC” .

I wanted to veer out of my comfort zone (and did I ever!) and write a straight paranormal. Since I already had an affinity for wizards (albeit T-FLAC/psi kick butt-take-no-prisoners-wizards) I decided to start there.
The Aequitas and the Omnivatics have been bitter enemies since the beginning of time. There's a lot of history and bad blood between them. Fortunately, the Omnivatics died out hundreds of years ago. . .Or did they? (Of course not, or I wouldn't have a book, I'd have a page!)

Jackson Slater is an Aequitas warrior, but foremost, he's a geologist. (this isn't a T-FLAC book for those who are asking :) He's sexy, driven, focused and fabulous. :) His life's work is the tracking of mystical leylines which give(my)wizards their powers. I fell in love with Jack, and because I loved him, gave him my biggest fear. Snakes.

Sara Temple is also a wizard. A non practicing wizard. When she tries spells they always go horribly wrong. She thinks the whole wizard thing is stupid and dangerous, and she leaves well enough alone. She's living her life happily and magic free. Sara is focused, driven and sexy. (see how these two are exactly the same but completely different?! Lol) And because I adored Sara I made her an interior designer (which I used to be :)

11.  Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?

Both. One can be learned (story) but voice is something that not only can't be learned, it has to develop (like a fine wine :) over time. You can have one without the other and still have a great book. But having both makes the reading experience richer and and more satisfying.

12. Cherry, please tell us where we can find you out in cyber world. For desperate readers like me, we just have to know…:)

Thanks for asking :) My cyber world is http://www.cherryadair.com/. There people can find excerpts, fun slide shows with scenes from each book, and a gallery of my guys. I can also be found chatting away on Twitter and Facebook.

13. I know this is a difficult question with there being so many amazing authors out there to choose from but who are some of the GOT-TO-HAVE authors in your TBR pile?

Not in any order and by no means all of them! Ann Stuart, Suzan Elizabeth Phillips, Linda Howard, Elizabeth Lowell- and a 100 more! Unfortunately I don't get to read nearly as much as I used to, or want to. But I like to keep my favs close, for when I do have a spare couple of hours to indulge myself.

14.  What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?

After BLACK MAGIC, which is a standalone single title out this month, I have two new series coming out early next year. The first kicks off with UNDERTOW in January, the other starts off with a bang with HUSH in May. I'm SO excited about both of these new series. I wish I wrote faster so I could see what happens in these two new worlds next!

I’d like to thank Cherry Adair for stopping by and spending time with us, it’s been a blast getting to know more about you and your books. I wish you all the best and much success in everything you do. :)

Thanks for inviting me in to chat. Since I'm holed up in my office 24/7 I don't get out much. Lol I love hearing from readers, so feel free to come by and say hi via my website, or on Twitter or Facebook.

Oh, and if you want a bookmark or personalized bookplate send a SASE tot Cherry Adair bookmarks, P.O. Box 8591, Covington, Washington. And I'll pop those in the mail to you asap. :)

Thanks, this has been fun. :)
